News Update: Tragedy in Denham Town as Boy Dies Just Before 12th Birthday

A heartbreaking tragedy has struck Denham Town in Kingston, where an 11-year-old boy and a 60-year-old man were killed in a house fire early Tuesday morning.

The child has been identified as Jaydon Whyte, a Grade Seven student at Denham Town High School. The adult victim has been identified as Junior Barrett, 60. Jamaica Gleaner

According to the Jamaica Gleaner, residents noticed smoke coming from a house along Nelson Street sometime after midnight and immediately rushed to help. Some reportedly kicked in a window and a door in an attempt to reach anyone who might have been trapped inside, but the intense heat and heavy smoke forced them back. Jamaica Gleaner

The Jamaica Fire Brigade says it was alerted to the blaze at about 12:50 a.m., with firefighters responding alongside members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. After the flames were brought under control and cooling-down operations began, the charred remains of the two victims were discovered inside the house. Jamaica Gleaner

What makes this story even more painful is the timing.

Jaydon was just one day away from celebrating his 12th birthday, according to the Gleaner. Nationwide Radio also reported that he was due to celebrate his 12th birthday around the time of the tragedy. Jamaica Gleaner

And since this story broke, more has emerged about the type of child Jaydon was.

His principal, Yvette Richards-Thompson, described him as loving, kind and caring. She said that although he had only joined Denham Town High in September, he had already made a strong impression on staff and students. Jamaica Gleaner

According to the principal, Jaydon was known for looking out for other students. She said he would sometimes quietly approach her if he believed another student was being treated unfairly, and he was also known to share his lunch with classmates. Jamaica Gleaner

In fact, school administrators reportedly became so concerned about how freely he gave away his lunch money that a supervisor sometimes had to hold it for him because he would give almost everything he had to someone else who asked. Jamaica Gleaner

His death has now left Denham Town High School in mourning, with flowers and messages reportedly placed on his desk by students and staff. Jamaica Gleaner

This tragedy is also adding to concerns about a recent series of deadly fires in downtown Kingston.

Nationwide reports that this is the third fire in Denham Town in less than two months, according to West Kingston Member of Parliament Desmond McKenzie. The station also notes that another fire in Parade Gardens on September 12 claimed the lives of two young children, four-year-old Samson Cameron and seven-year-old Keriecia Hutchinson. At this point, authorities have not publicly disclosed what caused Tuesday morning’s fire, and the incident remains under investigation. Jamaica Gleaner

For the Denham Town community, however, the focus right now is on the two lives lost — and particularly a young boy who was preparing to celebrate another year of life, but never got the chance.

Jaydon Whyte is being remembered by those who knew him as a child who was generous, compassionate and willing to stand up for others.

The investigation into the cause of the blaze continues.
