Soldier Shot Dead in Linstead, While St Catherine Under State of Emergency
A member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) was shot and killed by unknown assailants in Linstead, St Catherine on Tuesday, July 10, while the parish is under a state of emergency.
According to reports, the soldier was murdered at around 10:30 pm, while the officer was standing on the streetside close to his home in Linstead.
It was reported that the deceased was having a conversation with a group of persons when armed men approached the group and opened fire.
The military man who was not wearing a uniform at the time of the incident reportedly managed to tackle and relieve one of the men of his weapon, while the other, who caught wind of what was happening, shot the soldier, who later died from the injuries sustained.
The attackers then hurriedly fled the scene of the shooting without injuring anyone else.
The identity of the soldier has not yet been disclosed.
The parish of St Catherine has been under a state of emergency (SOE), as part of an initiative by the government in the St Catherine North Police Division, to reduce the flare-up of violence in the parts of the parish.
