During the sitting, Isat Buchanan, a Jamaican politician and attorney-at-law who serves as the Member of Parliament for Portland Eastern, made a contribution calling for greater respect, discipline, and accountability from all members of Parliament.
Buchanan reminded the House that young people are watching and that Parliament plays an important role in shaping how citizens view leadership, respect, and public service.
He said political pageantry and emotional exchanges were getting in the way of advancing the business of Jamaica.
The Portland Eastern MP encouraged members on both sides of the aisle to take time to properly read and understand the Standing Orders before opposing or reacting during parliamentary proceedings.
He also raised concerns about how women are treated in Parliament, saying that issues such as race, culture, gender, and politics should not distract members from making meaningful contributions.
Importantly, Buchanan did not single out any one member by name. Instead, his message was directed at the Parliament as a whole.
He said respect must come from every member and that the House should focus more on productive debate and less on unnecessary conflict.
Buchanan also stated that some of the disorder seen in Parliament has become embarrassing, especially when members of the public ask elected representatives why there appears to be a lack of respect inside the House.
Following his remarks, the House Leader responded by saying the review of the Standing Orders gives Parliament an opportunity to reset, close gaps, and strengthen the rules and courtesies that guide the chamber.
The discussion made it clear that several members believe Parliament needs to improve its conduct and return focus to the country’s business.
While political disagreements are expected in any democracy, the main message from the sitting was that debate should be handled with respect, order, and accountability.
This moment now adds to the wider conversation about parliamentary behaviour in Jamaica and whether the review of the Standing Orders can help create a more disciplined and productive House.
